Links are very important to getting your site optimised. As well as this it also generates more traffic to your website. It is important to remember when you add links that you choose them carefully and not link to any sites as this can decrease your 'Page Rank'. You must also remember that different links have different weights in votes. This means by linking to say a credible page in your industry (such as the REC( is counted as a better vote then linking to a random site.
Search engines also frown upon links farms that you pay to link to, Google sees this as cluttering up the web and not offering any useful or relevant links. If you can possibly link to a page that has a higher Page Rank than you it will again improve your ranking as it counts as another vote to your site.
As well as having external links it is also important to have internal links. This will allow the spiders to crawl your pages as easily as possible and is also great for users to navigate around your website.
Adding external and internal links is not a one off exercise, it should be improved on constantly, and by doing this you are sure to improve your organic search results as well as 'Page Rank'.
